In Memoriam: Chip Downey

Francis “Chip” Xavier Downey, Jr., 64, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2022. He was born on June 22, 1958, in Boston, Mass., to Francis X Downey, Sr. and Brenda (Sullivan) Downey.

Chip grew up in Falmouth. He graduated from Cheverus High School in Portland in 1977. After high school, he attended the University of Maine in Orono where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1981 and where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity.

Chip married Susan (Bickmore) Downey in 1988 and later had two children, Francis “Jake” and John. The two were longtime residents of Cumberland where they raised their family. Chip spent his career working in the car wash industry, with over 30 years proudly serving his own family-run business of car washes, “Fill-It-Up, Please.” His faith was very important to him and he was a life-long communicant of Holy Martyrs Parish in Falmouth.

Chip is survived by his two children, Francis “Jake” of Boston, Mass. and John of Cumberland; Susan (Bickmore) Downey; his mother of Yarmouth; his six siblings, Daniel (Laurie) Downey, of Portland, Brenda Downey, of Yarmouth, Susan Flynn, of Falmouth, John (Lisa) Downey, of Cumberland, Louisa Routh, of Yarmouth, and Teddy (Margaret) Downey, of Falmouth. Chip is also survived by his many many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Chip will be forever remembered for his kindness and generosity, but most of all for his deep devotion to his family. His greatest love was spending time together with them. He was always optimistic, respected by all who knew him, and he was always ready to share a story and loved a good laugh.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebratedon Saturday, July 23 at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Rd. in Falmouth. A reception immediately followed at the Portland Country Club, 11 Foreside Rd., Falmouth, ME 04105.
